Carl Bomberger, Teacher
This year has been a very positive experience. I use ALEKS once per week as a way to review Algebra skills.

Scenario

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
I wasn't able to provide review activities that were specifically geared toward each student's needs.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
1 day per week

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
40 minutes

Implementation

How do you implement ALEKS?
Students work in ALEKS for one period per week. During every two-week period, they're required to work for a minimum of 80 minutes and master a minimum of seven topics.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
No.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
Students work at their own pace. I provide encouragement and little direct instruction.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
Other than the ALEKS period, I haven't modified my teaching approach.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
Students are encouraged if they are having difficulty mastering the minimum number of ALEKS topics during class time (or if they're absent).

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
I haven't done anything in this regard.

Grading

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
No. I count ALEKS as its own grade.

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
Every two weeks, students can earn ten points by mastering a minimum of seven new topics, and ten points for spending a minimum of 80 minutes in ALEKS. By the end of a typical grading period, this would account for approximately 8-10 percent of their grade.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
Yes. Students are responsible for mastering seven new topics every two weeks, and for spending 80 minutes in the ALEKS program.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
I have seen many students take pride in mastering topics. I also feel that ALEKS provides opportunities for essential review of previously learned math skills. Student responses have been predominantly positive. Many students are very motivated to show their mastery of topics.
