Rebecca Freeland, Learning Specialist
We have had our RtI Math students working in ALEKS all year long. It has been beneficial for the students to see their own growth throughout the year as their skills continue to develop. We also use ALEKS for our special needs students in Academic Lab.

Scenario

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
Our students are artistic and generally thrive more in the humanities than in math and science. Also, because our students have such a varied background academically (coming from 92 cities around Orange County/Southern California), many of them have math skills that vary across levels.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
2-3 days per week

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
30-45 minutes

Implementation

How do you implement ALEKS?
It is used as a supplement to help students who are far behind in their Pre-Algebra and Algebra skills.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
Based on individual needs.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
In our RtI class, the instructor works in small groups with students on specific skills, while a few students work independently in ALEKS. The instructor then checks their progress and provides support for the skills they are still struggling with.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
We have a small group setting with less than 10 students in the class.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
Daily.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
They can check on student progress at home, and via email.

Grading

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
No.

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
It is not part of their math grade.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
No.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
Student skills have improved significantly over the course of the school year. Overall, they enjoy the ability to monitor their own progress and growth.

Best Practices

Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
It is a great way for students to really understand and focus their studies in specific areas. The program breaks down each specific skill they need to know, so the students have more structure with their learning, and can see growth in those skills over time.
