Timothy Hurley, Teacher
I think ALEKS was very helpful for giving students a review of old concepts that they were unable to master when they first learned them.

Scenario

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
In my Geometry class, students have a lot of trouble with algebra skills, so ALEKS does a good job of reinforcing these skills.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
1 day per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
45 minutes.

Implementation

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
No, students are allowed to work freely.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
We spend one period per week in the computer lab using ALEKS.

Grading

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
No.

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
ALEKS makes up approximately 15 percent of the students' grades. They get points for each session in the computer lab.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
No.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
Students are more comfortable with simple concepts that they were previously uncomfortable with. I do find that some students who do very little or do very poorly in a standard math class will excel with ALEKS because they are able to work on their own with no distractions and at their own pace.
