Robin Chieco, Supervisor of Math and Science
ALEKS has assisted our school in making progress towards achieving AYP on the High School Proficiency Assessments (HSPA). I believe that the students who participate in the program are able to improve their scores.

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
We had difficulty making AYP with sub-group populations. I believe ALEKS has assisted our efforts to improve the scores of these students, as well as our general population students.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
1 day per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
45 minutes.

How do you implement ALEKS?
Students are selected based on previous state and local testing to receive supplemental services. These students participate in ALEKS once per week until March.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
Approximately one-third of our eleventh grade students attend one class period per week. We have a small classroom with computers designated for this small group instruction. A math teacher works with the students to assist them if they have questions.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
Teachers provide individual attention based on the needs of the students rather than teach to the group as a whole.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
Students are given the access information to use at home.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
We explain to the parents that ALEKS is in place to assist their students in becoming successful in passing the HSPA.

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
Students receive a separate grade for ALEKS because this is a class that they take in addition to their regular math class. It is an additional period of math that they receive every week.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
No. Students are required to participate and they work at their own pace.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
We have seen positive gains in our HSPA scores. Most students participate for the entire period they are enrolled in the program. We ensure a 1:5 teacher-to-student ratio.

Best Practices

Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
I would recommend that the teacher-to-student ratio be small and that teachers be available to provide individual attention to students.
