ALEKS has been a motivator for my Special Education students. Since I have started using ALEKS, I have seen a much higher interest in math. They enjoy the independence of using the computer to learn math. Students are able to focus on areas of need and it allows for more differentiation in the classroom.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
4 days per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
In the first three quarters of the school year, I only use ALEKS intermittently as a supplement to the general instruction (approximately one hour per week). During the fourth quarter, students are working solely on ALEKS during the instructional period to reinforce what they have learned this year.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
Students log into ALEKS upon arrival in class and work independently until the period is over. My Education Assistant and I walk around to monitor progress and to assist those who need help.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I use the reports from ALEKS to see which topics have not been mastered so that these can be reviewed or re-taught.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
They are encouraged to work on ALEKS at home on a daily basis; however, I do not require it because I know many do not have access to computers outside of school.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
I print ALEKS reports for the parents when giving out progress reports so they can see their child's progress.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
Students are given a specific number of points daily if they are working on ALEKS.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
I do not set benchmarks for them; however, I do constantly monitor the topics attempted and the topics mastered.
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
Students have shown an overall improvement in math skills. Those who work diligently and consistently are now testing approximately 70 percent better than before the use of ALEKS. Students are excited to look at their progress graphs. The visual representation of their progress motivates them to keep trying.
Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
It is important to monitor students' use of ALEKS and make sure that they continue to get personal help to understand topics that they are having difficulty grasping.
