I believe ALEKS is a great development in math curriculum and programming, and I enjoy the program very much.
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
My greatest difficulty generally involves student pace. A large portion of my class works very slowly, so I constantly struggle with providing individual support.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
5 days per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
I have a small class size of about 15 students, along with a few certified math teachers who help to implement ALEKS.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
Our class periods basically revolve around ALEKS. We have tried other methods of incorporation, but using ALEKS consistently seems to be the best and most effective way to improve assessment scores and build students' skill sets.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I have not had to adjust my teaching style very much at all, especially since math is not my main subject. I do not teach any other math classes, but I am actually a computer programming instructor.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
As an educator, I try to always encourage studying and practicing at home. However, it is very rare that my students work on ALEKS at home, as they use the program daily while at school.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
I made sure to contact all of the parents for the class and let them know about ALEKS.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
As my class is completely centered on utilizing the ALEKS program, their progress constitutes 100 percent of their grade.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
Yes. I like to see a minimum of 1 percent or two objectives completed a day. Additionally, I administer biweekly assessments where around 1 percent progress is also expected.
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
I think these students should feel great. They probably don't even realize that their ALEKS lessons are actually more difficult than their regular school-year courses. They score as well, or better, on their assessments after returning from summer break, which I think is a very positive result. The students have all communicated that they feel good about their progress.
Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
I honestly believe that if you go into your class expecting great things, you will have excellent results.
