Justin Grubbs, Teacher
I use ALEKS as a supplement to my Pre-Algebra curriculum for our at-risk ninth grade students.

Scenario

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
My students had behavioral issues, and sometimes did not engage in the way they should.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
2 days per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
40 minutes.

Implementation

How do you implement ALEKS?
I assign an ALEKS cumulative quiz and assessment, and include these scores in their grade.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
No, because it's very individualized and cumulative.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
ALEKS is used as a supplemental curriculum to what's taught in class. I use ALEKS more as a continuous cumulative review.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I condensed the traditional classroom material and activities in order to provide time for ALEKS.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
I encourage students to work in ALEKS at home, however many of my students do not have computers at home.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
One set of parents has been pushing their child to work in ALEKS at home in order to get the student's score up in math; this is encouraging.

Grading

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
No.

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
ALEKS is approximately one-third of the overall grade. We will be working on taking ALEKS further over the summer, and  discussing how to further implement the ALEKS program.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
Yes. I raise the bar every couple of weeks, so that instead of 60 percent being an A, it gradually raises to 80 percent, 90 percent, and higher.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
My students are encouraged by the ALEKS program. They are more engaged and are concerned about their progress. ALEKS motivates them to do better.
