I find the ALEKS program to be invaluable. In particular, students who come to my class without many of the requisite skills benefit greatly from the ALEKS program.
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
The biggest challenge my students faced was a lack of prerequisite knowledge.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
4 days per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
Up to 30 minutes.
How do you implement ALEKS?
I use ALEKS for intervention, homework, and assessments.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
My preference is to cover the topics that align with California math standards.
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
ALEKS is used for homework, intervention, and assessments.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
ALEKS assists me in getting students up to speed and assessing student understanding of the state standards.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
Students are asked to use ALEKS every school night.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
Parents are required to monitor their children's time in ALEKS.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
I use ALEKS for the majority of homework grades.
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
Homework in ALEKS is worth 20 percent. Students can earn extra points for a grade of 70 percent or above on ALEKS-based tests.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
Progress in ALEKS is measured in two ways: time spent in ALEKS and percentage completed compared to the previous time period.
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
My struggling and otherwise unmotivated students are able to use ALEKS to greatly enhance their motivation, and therefore their understanding of the required concepts. My students feel that using ALEKS is a fun addition to their math classes.
