Jacqui Evans, Math Department Specialist
Our experience has been very positive. The students that we assign to the ALEKS lab are kids that passed Algebra 1 but failed the Algebra 1 End of Course Assessment (ECA). We put them in Algebra 2 but supplement it with the ALEKS Algebra 1 course. The material is very inclusive and we are able to pick and choose the concepts that we want reviewed. All of the students have improved greatly, and for the most part, the students in the ALEKS lab had higher grades than those in Algebra 2 without the extra support.

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
We are an inner-city school so our math scores are low.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
2-3 days per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
92 minutes.

How do you implement ALEKS?
It is a supplemental lab that we use for those that failed the Algebra 1 ECA.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
The students work the entire period at their own pace with assessments being assigned every Thursday or Friday, depending on the week since we are on a block schedule.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
It is an independent course.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
No, they were encouraged but few did.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
We didn't, really.

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
It is an elective credit for math lab.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
Not really. They are expected to work every day and show some amount of improvement.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
All but one student passed Algebra 2 with the help of the ALEKS lab. They admitted that they learned a lot and enjoyed being at the top of their Algebra class.
