Donna Moore, Teacher
Many of my students have had a positive experience with ALEKS. I like the ability to individualize instruction for my students. The reports give me information about what my students know and what they need to learn. Many of my students have achieved success using the ALEKS program, especially in the area of improving their basic skills. Students feel a sense of accomplishment in completing parts of ALEKS.

Scenario

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
3 days per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
45 minutes.

Implementation

How do you implement ALEKS?
We use it to help our struggling students (most of the class) with basic skills and other concepts that they may not have mastered in other math classes.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
No.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
On days that we use ALEKS, we go directly to the computer lab. The students log on to the program, and work at their pace. My collaborating teacher and I monitor students and help with difficulties and questions.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
Not a lot, but we have plans to use ALEKS again next year and are looking at ways of further integrating ALEKS into our curriculum.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
We did not require it because some students do not have Internet access at home.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
We have not.

Grading

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
No.

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
We enter one grade based on their ALEKS work. Next year, I hope to incorporate more of the teacher-prepared quizzes that are a part of the program.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
This is something that we will be working on for next year.
