I am very impressed with ALEKS because the students are able to progress on their own with very little coaching from the teacher. This enables me to serve a very large group of math learners. The way ALEKS automatically reviews skills that need reviewing based on the assessments, really helps students reinforce their skills.
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
The other online program we used was nearly impossible to complete. Textbooks are generally not user-friendly enough for students to make progress on their own.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
5 days per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
We have an open lab that students use independently with several teachers available for assistance.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
We let students work independently.
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
We have an open lab with ALEKS.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
Before ALEKS we used another web-based program, so our approach is about the same.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
Students work in ALEKS at home for at least one hour per week.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
All of the math homework is ALEKS.
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
We base student grades on percent of topics completed. We agreed as a district as to what those percent should be for the first semester and second semester grades.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
We let students work independently and monitor their own progress. If they aren't making progress, we meet with them and their parents to encourage a better plan.
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
I have seen students who usually can't progress in traditional curriculum or even other online programs make excellent progress in math with ALEKS and complete their course of study. I would estimate that 99 percent of the students really appreciate the progress they are able to make in ALEKS. They feel satisfaction and pride in their accomplishments.
Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
Train students to ask for help if they are struggling with certain topics. Also, watch students to see that they are using good strategies for making progress, such as taking notes, making use of reference materials, graph paper, or other tools.
