We utilize ALEKS in our classrooms where students need extra math help. Our students have made great strides in both the ALEKS program and in the classroom. Classroom instruction is so much easier since the students are always practicing concepts in the ALEKS program. Student assessment scores have improved dramatically!
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
The students would forget a concept within a week. The repetition in ALEKS has made a huge difference.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
2 days per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
We began using ALEKS three days a week and taught the other two days. Now, we teach three day a week and use ALEKS for two days.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
ALEKS is the full class period on Monday and Friday.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
We teach three day a week and use ALEKS for two days.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
We encourage students to use the program an additional hour per week.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
It is difficult to cultivate parent involvement at all in this class. We have offered each student in the school the chance to subscribe to ALEKS during the summer to supplement their learning. Some parents are quite receptive.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
We tried to assign ALEKS as part of homework, but students don't all have access to a computer.
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
We break the grade down by time and topics mastered: 10 percent of their grade is based on time and 30 percent is based on topics.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
We definitely require regular progress for students in credit recovery. For my regular class, it is based upon the time and topic for each week.
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
Student assessment scores have improved dramatically! This is the second year most of these students have used ALEKS, and they are so proud of themselves when they see their progress. They do admit that they are really learning!
Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
Use it enough to make a difference!
