ALEKS is a wonderful program that both my students and I like to use.
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
We did not have an organized and effective solution to help our students quickly master the TAKS math objectives.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
3-5 days per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
We went right to work and just signed on, and began using with initial assessment as a guide.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
No. The students like freedom to pick and choose.
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
We have an alternative schedule, so ALEKS can be used at almost any time of the day.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I have learned to give "mini-lessons" instead of longer teaching sessions on one particular topic.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
I focus on the positive progress the students make towards their goal, as parents enjoy seeing their children do well.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
No. All work is done at school.
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
ALEKS work is given as regular assignments, counting about 20 percent of their grade.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
My students are allowed to learn and work at their own pace. I do not implement progress requirements or measurements, but do monitor that some forward progress is taking place.
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
Our students are more interested in math after using ALEKS because they can work at their own pace. They love being able to visually monitor their own progress with their pies.
Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
Be sure to have students use ALEKS faithfully and regularly, even the assessments!
