Steve Morris, Teacher
I think that the Algebra 1 course through ALEKS is the best program available on the market today. ALEKS consistently analyzes a student's current position in the overall mastery of the subject. With ALEKS, students are allowed to move at their individual pace and most are pleased once they finish and look back at their progress.

Scenario

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
There was a high need for a valid remediation course that was not simply multiple choice questioning.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
2-3 days per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
80 minutes.

Implementation

How do you implement ALEKS?
It is the curriculum.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
I try to encourage students work through their pie at a clockwise rotation, beginning with the green slice located at "12:00." Some students listen and others do not.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
Students work from bell to bell and ask me for additional help when the program's explanations aren't enough. Every two weeks the students take an assessment.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I am more hands off. I just redirect activity and assist with problem-solving techniques.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
Students are encouraged daily, but never required to work on ALEKS at home.

Grading

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
No.

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
ALEKS is the students' grade. Once their mastery level reaches 85 percent, then they are eligible to take the final Comprehensive Assessment, which counts for the final exam.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
We encourage students to accomplish regular amounts of progress using the privilege of music. It works sometimes, but can sometimes be more of a burden.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
With ALEKS, students are allowed to move at their individual pace and most are pleased once they finish and look back at their progress.

Best Practices

Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
Establish a minimum level of achievement with your administration. If the student is not working to that minimum level, then the student should be encouraged. If after that encouragement the student still chooses to not work to the next level, then have a policy that would remove the student from the course and allow them to take it another time when their efforts would be more in-line with success.
