Christine Blaisdell, Teacher
ALEKS gives my students a chance to work at their own pace without feeling pressured or inadequate. Even though they haven't used it that much since we started, they have improved their skills tremendously. I would recommend this program to all math teachers.

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
Students come to my class with different learning levels and math deficiencies.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
1 day per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
45-60 minutes.

How do you implement ALEKS?
Since my students meet two hours once a week, I have them do ALEKS half the time. All of our students have a laptop, plus I have a cart, so they all can access our Internet.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
Half of the class is instruction, and the other half is dedicated to ALEKS.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I shortened it.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
As much as possible.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
I explain how this program can benefit them and their child's skills.

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
It is assigned as part of their homework.

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
I take the amount of time divided by the topics learned.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
The students are very excited, and I have seen a ten percent increase during the little time we have used ALEKS.

Best Practices

Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
When I need to focus on graphing, I have my students do the graphing sections in ALEKS. All of my classes are at different levels, so each one does it differently. Regardless, ALEKS helps students at all levels.
