Kristen Sheehan, Teacher/Department Head
I use ALEKS as the third part of a three-part math program. The students work on QuickTables and their pie each week and receive the ALEKS Worksheets as reinforcement. The students love ALEKS. As a class, we track everyone's time and progress each week, and they enjoy seeing their pies being completed. The best indicator of progress that I have seen has been in my higher level students; they have not only completed their own grade level course but have had the freedom to move onto other courses.

Scenario

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
Meeting the needs of all individual learners, whether high or low.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
3 days per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
20 minutes.

Implementation

How do you implement ALEKS?
We use it in place of a regular math lesson, and the students also do it at home.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
No.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
We go to the school's computer lab, and everyone works in ALEKS at the same time.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
Only the schedule changes.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
A minimum of twice a week, but the majority of students are on ALEKS every night.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
Through parent conferences and workshops that teach them what ALEKS is.

Grading

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
Yes, twice a week, they are required to do 30 minutes of ALEKS work.

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
Ten percent of the math grade is derived from ALEKS QuickTables quiz results, and it is a separate skill on the report card.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
No, they are to progress at their own level.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
