Jane Segovia, Teacher
ALEKS has been very beneficial for my students who are not ready for Algebra 1. They are able to learn and practice the skills they need and to progress in their knowledge of math.

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
In a classroom of 22 or more students, each student came with different needs and with different skills that they were lacking. It was difficult to teach them in the 45-minute period.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
5 days per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
45 minutes.

How do you implement ALEKS?
The first year we had ALEKS, the math class went to the computer lab once a week. I noticed there was some progress. In our summer program, students used ALEKS daily and showed great progress and improvement. This year, we implemented the additional required course for those unable to take Algebra 1. The additional math time has made a great difference in their progress and attitude towards math.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
Generally my students need to master basics. When that is completed, I have them focus on the part of their pie that we are focusing on in class.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
ALEKS is a separate lab class for students at the Pre-Algebra level. Students also attend a daily math class.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
Basically, classroom instruction stayed the same. I was able to reference ALEKS when teaching as well as have students do certain activities to enhance their classwork.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
Only when absent.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
Parents receive an explanation of the program at the beginning of the year.

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
Students are asked to make progress. ALEKS is a pass or fail class.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
Students are expected to make progress. Every two weeks students take an assessment. Each student is given a goal ranging from five percent to ten percent gain at each assessment.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
Student scores in their regular classroom have improved. They are able to have daily practice on both new material as well as remedial work. Students have generally been excited to see their pie chart fill up and to see their progress quickly assessed. They are proud of themselves and no longer have the same anxiety about math.

Best Practices

Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
The additional class for ALEKS has made all the difference with my students.
