Climax Springs High School, Climax Springs R-IV
Climax Springs, MO Grade(s): 7 - 12 Scenario: One-to-One Laptop Program Purpose: Intervention, At-Risk Students ALEKS Portion of Curriculum: 100% Time Spent in ALEKS: 4.17 hours per week, 37.5 hours per term ALEKS Course: Essential Mathematics (with QuickTables), Middle School Math Course 3, High School Preparation for Algebra 1, Algebra 1, High School Geometry, Algebra 2, PreCalculus, Trigonometry Irene Mauss, Teacher The experience has been a very positive one. I use it as an intervention tool for some struggling students. They are much more engaged and their mastery of the concepts has improved dramatically, as they are allowed to work at their own pace, which is quicker for some concepts and slower for the more difficult ones.
Scenario What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS? It was difficult to differentiate instruction because there are only two math teachers for the entire high school. How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS? 5 days per week. What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used? 50 minutes. Implementation How do you implement ALEKS? We piloted ALEKS with some students who were at-risk. They are on it as independent study students. Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order? No. How do you structure your class period with ALEKS? The students come in, get their computers, and go to work. Once a week, they are given a worksheet generated by ALEKS so they still have some math on paper delivery skills. How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS? I still teach my regular classes while the pilot students are on the computer with ALEKS. How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home? I do not require home use of ALEKS since many do not have Internet access at home. Grading Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it? They have no homework. How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system? If they meet the daily time expectations, they get credit for classroom participation. When they complete a worksheet, that grade goes in as an assessment. Occasionally, I will give them an ALEKS quiz. Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS? Yes, I give intermediate objectives and monitor their progress toward their objectives. Learning Outcomes Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen. The students who are on ALEKS full-time improve their knowledge of the concepts much quicker than they do with the typical classroom delivery method. They feel much more positive, like the immediate feedback, and enjoy watching their pie chart grow. |
