I have been using ALEKS for the past year and a half as a credit recovery course for students who have failed their regular education math class. It has been a positive experience for both me and my students. They really enjoy being able to work at their own pace through the program and teach themselves. ALEKS has good example problems and thorough explanations to help my students.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
4 days per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
We created a separate class for students who had failed a previous math class. Not all students in the room are taking the same course.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
No, we let the students choose what topics they want to cover.
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
Students come in and work on the program. I offer them help when they struggle, but we mostly let the program direct students.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I am basically a tutor in the room. There is no lecture; I just help students as needed.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
I remind them frequently that they can work on ALEKS at home.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
We educate our parents as to what ALEKS is, and tell them how to access it at home.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
Students earn math credit based on how far they get in the program. If a student gets 70 percent through the program, they earn 0.7 math credit.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
I believe my students are learning the material. The reassessments in ALEKS have really helped them to master the material. I see students who need to repeat a topic at least once remembering how to do that problem type later on. They really enjoy being able to work at their own pace and learn on their own.
