Beverly Mysyk, Teacher
We have had a very positive experience with ALEKS so far.

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
One of our big challenges is getting students motivated to do math and keeping them involved with math on a regular basis.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
1 day per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
20-40 minutes.

How do you implement ALEKS?
We gave students the initial assessment, and they are currently working on developing skills in their pie.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
We are letting students pick the topics they want to work on based on their individual needs.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
We have several extended class periods a week. We take students down to the library, either half the class at a time or the entire class, to work on ALEKS.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
We have only been using ALEKS for about a month. We have not modified our teaching approach yet.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
The expectation is that students get in 60 minutes of ALEKS per week.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
We email parents to let them know when the ALEKS assignments are due. We also have shared information with parents at open houses and parent/teacher conferences.

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
Yes, one hour per week on ALEKS. This would be about 20 percent of their total homework load.

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
ALEKS is averaged into their homework/class work grades, which make up about 25 percent of their total grade. There are about 350 homework/class work points and about the same number of ALEKS points per quarter.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
That is our eventual goal, but we have not gotten that far yet. I think we will be looking at the percent that is added on to their initial assessment as their progress.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
We have not used ALEKS long enough to see significant progress. The students, in general, like working on ALEKS. They like seeing their progress and working towards set goals.
