ALEKS has really improved the performance of our freshmen students coming into our high school. All students have made progress and seem to enjoy the program.
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
The previous program was not useful because of the limited question bank. The students who use ALEKS are usually not very advanced in mathematics. They have trouble with the basics, but ALEKS seems to get their confidence up and keep them working.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
2 days per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
We use ALEKS as an RtI tool to get the lower-ability students caught up to the rest of the class. It's done in blocks of time between teaching subject matter.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
To some extent. We try to provide the students with some flexibility because we want them to own this experience.
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
Right now, ALEKS is used as a Response to Intervention (RtI) tool. The students use class time to strengthen their skills.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
The teaching was modified a little to accommodate the textbook that we had. This year we intend to use ALEKS more than the book.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
It is encouraged every day.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
We hope to improve on this in the future.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
No. ALEKS requires a computer with Internet access, and not all of our students have that available to them at home.
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
We didn't include ALEKS in grading this year, but we are working on a plan for next year.
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
Each student has improved their outcomes. The Algebra class has been using it as part of the curriculum, and we intend to utilize it even more next year. I hear good comments from the students. We used another program before this year, but the students didn't use it correctly; the question bank was limited, and the students became bored quickly.
