I use ALEKS in a class called Algebra Concepts Review. We provide this course for students who did not pass Algebra Readiness, Algebra 1, and Algebra 2 in the first semester. ALEKS has proven very helpful in diagnosing each student's strengths and weaknesses, and guiding them to improve where needed in order to be successful in next year's course.
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
Students who failed first semester were left out of math during the second semester. We use ALEKS to keep them in math, as well as give them the opportunity to earn half a credit in a math course after failing the first semester.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
5 days per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
In a computer lab, each student logs in to ALEKS and works for the entire class period.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
No, students select what they would like to work on.
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
It is a pass/fail course based on time spent and progress made in ALEKS.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
We base the course on ALEKS.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
If they miss class time for any reason, students are expected to log in at home to make up the time.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
Parents are made aware at the beginning of the semester that their student is using ALEKS.
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
Students are given a pass/fail grade based on time spent in ALEKS and progress made.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
I expect my students to not go backwards in the percentage of their progress. I stress that after they take an assessment (weekly), they should not lose percentage but gain.
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
All of my students increased the percent of their ALEKS Pie dramatically in one semester. My students were excited to see their percentages increase over time.
