Thomas Portteus, Teacher
ALEKS has been a great tool for students with gaps in their fundamental arithmetic skills required for Algebra, particularly those identified with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) and those with special needs. Students are less dependent on calculators for basic skills as a result of using ALEKS.

Scenario

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
LEP and Special Education students were coming to high school with poor fundamental skills, having been given a calculator in the past for everything.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
2-3 days per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
0-20 minutes.

Implementation

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
No.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
Students use ALEKS when they are finished with other class assignments. They are also required to complete at least three hours of work per week, so if they don't get it done in class, they take it home or stay after school.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I did not need to modify.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
They have a weekly time requirement. Work that is not completed at school is homework.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
This is done by the Inclusion Specialists and English and a Second Language (ESL) staff.

Grading

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
Part. We do not grade homework like most schools, so it counts as a summative grade.

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
ALEKS counts as one equally weighted summative assessment grade per grading period. There are typically five or six of those grades.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
I have noticed students improving significantly on their fundamental skills, enabling them to respond quicker to questions and to work problems faster. Students have also responded positively to ALEKS. They like the ability to regularly track their progress so they can set short-term goals.
