The program has helped a number of students. Most enjoy having a computer-based educational portal to help them improve their mathematics.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
1 day per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
20 minutes.

How do you implement ALEKS?
For supplementary reasons only at this time. Students are required to work two hours at home each week.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
I have one lab day a week, but often due to budget cuts and fewer school days, I need to sacrifice the lab day to teach new material. Students are required to spend two hours a week in ALEKS.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
Two hours per week.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
I send an introduction letter home explaining the program and weekly hour requirements. Students have to get their letter signed and returned to their teacher.

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
Yes, they must complete two hours per week. It is their choice on how they want to break up that time.

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
ALEKS is five percent of their grade for completing the two hour weekly requirement.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
The students who have seen improved test scores and understanding in class have invested more time working within the program. Some feel it is just more work while others are happy to see their pie chart grow.

Best Practices

Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
Have students keep a learning log. This includes logging the day and amount of hours for each session they log in, with a notes and reflection section on what they worked on and learned.
