ALEKS is a very well designed program that helps students with their math skills. Although students have said they sometimes lose focus while working in the program, overall they have said that ALEKS has helped them.
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
The students had trouble with adding and subtracting integers, and also with memorizing their multiplication tables.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
2-3 days per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
I use ALEKS as a supplement to help struggling students improve their skills in Algebra.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
No, students just pick the slice of their ALEKS Pie that they want to work on. I sometimes make them do QuickTables before they start on their pies.
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
I use ALEKS for about half the class period after going over a particular concept with the students.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I lecture less and help the students more with one-on-one assistance.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
ALEKS is not used for homework. All of the students are asked to put forth effort throughout the class period in exchange for no homework.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
I don't. However, I am considering having some parental involvement in the future.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
As long as the student is working hard and trying, I give them full credit which is one point per day.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
Yes. At first, I told them that they needed to complete five topics per day. However, when the topics got more difficult, I told them that they will receive full credit as long as they are working the whole time.
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
I have four students who have finished the Algebra Readiness course and have transitioned into the Algebra 1 course. My other 11 students, although they have not finished, have made gains in their ALEKS course. Students feel good about their progress.
Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
I recommend continually walking around and checking on your students because sometimes they might need more assistance than the Explain button can provide.
