Scenario What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS? A common issue is students entering our high school with poor math skills. It's hard to teach high school math when they don't know middle school math. How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS? 1 day per week. What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used? N/A Implementation How do you implement ALEKS? We ran a seminar during lunch periods and also introduced home usage. Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order? The students follow the set-up of the particular math course they are enrolled in. How do you structure your class period with ALEKS? ALEKS is not used during class periods. How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home? 30 minutes per week. How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS? Parents are informed at the beginning of the year. Grading How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system? They receive five points per week for completing the 30 minutes. Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS? I just check to make sure they are making some progress. If they are logging on for 30 minutes but not making any progress, I do not give credit. Learning Outcomes Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen. I think our students have been able to fill in some of the gaps they were missing from middle school after using ALEKS. Obviously, the students who work hard are rewarded by their progress. |
