Amy Schmedeke, Special Education Teacher
My students are excited to see the level of progress they make with each lesson. They are able to focus on their own areas of need, and work in depth on each of their needs in order to improve their math skills and meet Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals. My students are also able to improve their math skills in order to be closer to meeting the core curriculum standards and return to the general education program.

Scenario

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
Having a variety of skill levels and topics of need was such a challenge. Each student needed a great deal of instruction in a variety of areas. Without ALEKS, I would not have been able to cover all the needs in the amount of time we had together in class.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
3 days per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
45 minutes.

Implementation

How do you implement ALEKS?
I use ALEKS to cover topics that vary from student to student. I use group instruction for areas everyone needs review on.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
I use Pearson Curriculum to guide the order of lessons.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
I taught group instruction two days and ALEKS three days.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I use ALEKS for much of their practice and for some instruction of topics throughout the curriculum.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
At least once a week at home or in homeroom.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
I have a classroom demonstration and send reports home.

Grading

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
No.

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
ALEKS assessments count as quiz grades. The grade is based on points, with ALEKS being about 50 percent of the points.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
The amount of time and lessons completed are measured each week.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
My students are excited to see the level of progress they make with each lesson. They are able to meet their IEP goals and improve their math skills in order to be closer to meeting the core curriculum standards and return to the general education program.
