We are pleased with the support we have had with the ALEKS group. I also like the management format and interface. Additionally, we are serving a multi-aged group and have found that ALEKS is a good match.
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
Students with different backgrounds and broad age ranges.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
5 days per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
No, students work independently.
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
We have open work periods.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
ALEKS really opens the door and allows our teachers to pursue other areas of curriculum.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
We involve the parents by giving them the passwords and login information. The students also work at home at their discretion.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
School work and homework overlap at our school, so there is really no distinction between the two.
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
The ALEKS grade is about 85 percent of the grade for the term.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
We are monitoring progress daily, and look for 4-5 topics per week.
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
All of our students are demonstrating growth, with some demonstrating more than others. We have had one student complete Pre-Algebra already. Overall, our students seem to like ALEKS.
Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
It is important to remind the kids to monitor their pies so they will always know where they stand.
