Eric Anderson, Teacher
I have seen intrinsic motivation in my students increase as they control their own pace, Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) scores increase, and overall interest in mathematics go up. Students who previously had very little interest in mathematics have taken a new interest and have a new belief that they can be good at mathematics. They feel very, very positive; for the majority of students who have figured out that they can own their learning, this was a game changer.
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
It was a new way to approach mathematics, and students, parents, and instructors all needed to be open minded about the approach.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
3-5 days per week.
How do you implement ALEKS?
I use ALEKS as the core curriculum for content so students can move at their own pace. I supplement with tutoring (one-on-one and group), office hours, and workshops. The content is reinforced in integrated seminars.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
No, it is student-driven.
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
Structured time every day that students could use towards ALEKS.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
It's a complete 180 degrees change from the traditional classroom.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
Daily or at least several times a week.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
I have several parent meetings and encourage parents to log on with their children. There was a lot of email correspondence at the beginning.
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
We grade on completion targets which I have aligned to ALEKS. To get credit for a course, the students must have 95 percent mastery in ALEKS.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
They must complete 95 percent mastery in ALEKS. They can move as quickly as they like but must complete it within the 12-month period.
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
Students have shown increased interest and mastery. They feel very, very positive. For the majority of students who have figured out that they can own their learning, this was a game changer.
Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
I am still in my first year with it, but after teaching math at the high school and college level for 15 years, ALEKS is a game changer for both students and instructors.
