Janice Niggemeyer, Fourth Grade Teacher
I love the program! My fourth graders use ALEKS 3-4 days a week and I think it exposes them to many things we might not otherwise get to with all students in the regular classroom. The kids love it and I think it has made their attitudes about math much more positive. They are always excited to head down to the lab.

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
We have many at-risk students coming from poor socioeconomic areas.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
3-4 days per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?

How do you implement ALEKS?
It was provided through a grant from our Area Education Agency (AEA) in Iowa the first few years, and we have continued to subscribe through a reduced rate that the AEA provides.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
No, other than postponing a few topics until they have had more preparation.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
We have a set time each day that we go to the lab for ALEKS.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I give mini lessons to supplement ALEKS when needed.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
We encourage students to work on ALEKS as often as they would like; however, many of them do not have home access.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
We give out flyers at open houses in order to explain ALEKS to parents.

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
We do not grade the students' participation in ALEKS.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
We do not require specific progress. Many of our special education students do not get as much time with the program.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
I always have a number of students finish the whole pie by the end of the year and they receive an award. Our middle school teacher has seen a difference in the amount and variety of material her kids have covered. Our students are always very excited to add to the pie!
