It has been very positive! The students love working on ALEKS, and I'm seeing a ton of improvement.
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
The students' basic skills were very low coming into junior high.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
3 days per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
We are using ALEKS as a practice tool. We still learn new things together as a group, and then use ALEKS for students to fill in gaps or work ahead.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
Yes, I have the topics aligned to my textbook.
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
We have whole group instruction for the first 45 minutes, and then approximately 25-30 minutes on ALEKS.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I have just recently incorporated ALEKS into their homework time.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
As often as they would like! I don't require it, but highly encourage it.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
I sent home a newsletter and communicate with parents through email.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
It's assigned as a part of their homework. If they work on ALEKS, they must show work for every problem. They receive a homework grade for their notes that is worth 10 points.
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
The ALEKS notes account for approximately 50 percent of their grade.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
Certain chapters must be completed by assigned deadlines.
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
My students' knowledge of math is growing by leaps and bounds with ALEKS. They love feeling successful and being challenged at the same time. . . . They're excited when their percentages increase and they add topics to their pies.
Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
Require the students to have an ALEKS binder to store their notes and other materials.
