Ashley Weakland, Teacher
I work with three students: one English Language Learner, and two regular education students.
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
The students were having difficulty in previous classes.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
3 days per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
The entire class is ALEKS. I give them generated worksheets to begin class, and the rest of the time is spent completing the pie.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
First, I issue an ALEKS-generated worksheet, which accounts for approximately 15 minutes. We then grade and review if we have the opportunity. For the remaining time, the students work on completing their pies.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
Not often, as two of my three students do not have computers.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
I do not involve parents at this time.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
The students will receive a pass/fail for completing a teacher-generated final exam.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
No, but I do work with them daily to keep them on task and make sure they understand the material.
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
The students engage in more self-directed learning. They really enjoy being able to see their progress visually with the pie.
Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
Encourage your students to have a side notebook so they can take notes, and use the opportunity to teach how to take good notes.
