Scenario

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
Students have difficulty getting help from parents at home, so ALEKS is a great tool for explaining concepts to students using easy-to-understand terminology.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
Varies.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
N/A

Implementation

How do you implement ALEKS?
I offer ALEKS as a choice to students. Students can use the program as a supplement to their textbook, or they can choose to complete all of their course work using ALEKS.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
No, I allow students to choose the order in which they work.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
Minimum of two hours per week.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
Parents are thrilled to be released from the responsibility of teaching or assisting their child with math skills and concepts. They enjoy the independence it allows their child to have.

Grading

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
Homework can be anywhere from 20 percent to 100 percent of ALEKS work, depending on the student's math course and specific needs.

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
For students whose math course work is 100 percent ALEKS, worksheets account for 50 percent of their grade and quizzes make up the remaining 50 percent.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
This varies from student to student. Goals are visited monthly and adjusted if necessary.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
Our students' test scores have improved on state tests, and they all feel very positive about their progress.

Best Practices

Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
ALEKS is a great program for homeschool or independent study students. Students can take responsibility for their own progress.
