Bethel Alternative Boarding School, Lower Kuskokwim School District
Bethel, AK Grade(s): 8 - 12 Scenario: Laptop Carts Purpose: Core Curriculum ALEKS Portion of Curriculum: 100% Time Spent in ALEKS: 2.5 hours per week, 45 hours per term ALEKS Course: Middle School Math Course 2, Middle School Math Course 3, Pre-Algebra, Foundations of High School Math, Algebra 1, High School Geometry Theodore Lindley, Teacher I teach in a classroom with students with abilities ranging from fourth grade math through Geometry, so ALEKS is a tremendous tool. Prior to ALEKS, I was using textbooks and had each student working independently. ALEKS is so much more engaging, and it allows me to spend more time working with individual students and less time putting out fires.
Scenario What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS? We were faced with material that was not engaging, and with the difficulty of managing a large group of students who are at different levels. How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS? 5 days per week. What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used? 35 minutes. Implementation How do you implement ALEKS? We tried ALEKS with a few students and saw how much they liked it, so we adopted it school wide. Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order? No. How do you structure your class period with ALEKS? Our class periods consist of about 15 minutes of direct instruction on preselected topics associated with areas of weakness, followed by independent ALEKS work for 35 minutes. How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS? I let ALEKS manage what students are working on. I reward students who are demonstrating progress. How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home? Weekly, although the response has been limited. How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS? We aren't at this time. Grading Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it? ALEKS is 100 percent of the assigned homework. How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system? We are on a system of indicators. When students demonstrate proficiency with skills, they advance. I use ALEKS to demonstrate proficiency when students have completed 95 percent of their pie. Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS? I reward those students who are mastering 10 or more topics per week by permitting them to listen to iPods the following week. I call this my "High Five Club." Learning Outcomes Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen. My students are now more engaged, and are progressing more rapidly. The greatest impact has been with my ADHD students; ALEKS has made a world of difference. My students vastly prefer ALEKS to textbook math methods. |
