April Byrne, Teacher
This is my first year using ALEKS and I think it is a great program. Every student has access to an ALEKS account for home use. In addition, we regularly visit our school media center for one math period per week for focused ALEKS use. I have recently begun using ALEKS to create quizzes that correspond to our current unit of study.

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
A big challenge is students not being proficient in basic math skills, such as multiplying and dividing. It's difficult to move ahead in math since concepts build upon one another.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
1 day per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
30 minutes.

How do you implement ALEKS?
Students in Math Support use ALEKS more frequently than others. Parents of struggling students are encouraged to promote ALEKS use at home.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
At the start of the year, students are encouraged to choose any topic they want. As the year progresses, I have them work on the topics we are covering in class.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
On days I take students to the lab to use ALEKS, I usually tell students which piece of the pie they should be working on or have them take a quiz before getting started. While students are working on the computers, I pull small groups of students to work with me on concepts with which they struggle.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I use ALEKS quizzes to assess students.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
They are encouraged to work on ALEKS any night when no other math homework is assigned. I did not require it this year.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
Parents who are looking for ways to help their children are encouraged to supervise student use of ALEKS at home.

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
I have used ALEKS quizzes as part of my grading system.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
I have seen students who are ready to move beyond our current unit of study use ALEKS to do just that. It has also helped students by "forcing" them to practice previously learned strategies until they are mastered -- notably fractions and negative numbers. Students who have completed their pie and moved on to the next level are really excited! When we start a new unit and kids are able to say, "Hey, I did this on ALEKS!" it really boosts their confidence level.
