Kristen Taylor, Teacher
We've had ALEKS for three and half months now. I use it daily as a tier 2 and tier 3 intervention. Students' skills have greatly improved!
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
We didn't have a class that was in addition to a student's math class, unless the student failed the Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress (ISTEP). Then, the course was for only one quarter.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
5 days per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
ALEKS is used in the tier 2 and tier 3 Math Intervention classes. These classes are in addition to the students' regular math classes.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
Most classes are small enough that all students can be working on ALEKS for the first 30 minutes of the class, and I can help them. One class is too large, so we have to alternate in 25 minute blocks. While one group is on ALEKS, I have an activity with the other group. I go back and forth between helping the ALEKS group and the activity group.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
My students aren't really motivated to work on ALEKS at home.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
Newsletters via email and parent night.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
No grade for this class.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
I don't require a certain amount of topics. However, we aim to complete 15-24 topics a week, depending on where students are in their pie.
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
Students' computation skills have increased. Students also like to see their pie fill in. However, they get frustrated when they reach the harder topics towards the end of the pie.
