Scenario

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
Being able to differentiate for students and give individual help in the area needed.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
1-2 days per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
54 minutes.

Implementation

How do you implement ALEKS?
I have modified my class curriculum to cut out any material that is not a standard we need to cover and have replaced it with intervention in ALEKS.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
No, I use it as intervention at the level the student needs to be.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
Currently I have the students working as a whole class, each on their own computers. I give them a checklist of what I would like them to do and they move through the list.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I have had to re-pace the class and cut out some extras.

Grading

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
ALEKS is not homework.

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
I have been giving them points for each topic mastered. They are given an amount of topics that need to be completed. They receive full credit if they reach their goal, the percent of their goal they reach, or extra if they surpass their goal.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
Yes, they are to pass a certain amount of topics depending on the amount of time they are given. I chart how many they have passed and how many are required.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
We are about three weeks in and use it 1-2 days a week. Students are getting the hang of the program and they feel good when they master a topic.

Best Practices

Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
Having extra help in the classroom makes implementation easier to group students for work. The students also need clear goals of what to accomplish each day.
