We have been using ALEKS as an intervention for struggling students. It has helped these kids to build their skills and their confidence in math. QuickTables is also a useful program for students who don't have mastery of their math facts. It's both engaging and motivational, unlike traditional drill and practice programs. Since using ALEKS, there have been several occasions when students tell me that they know how to do a skill I am introducing because they practiced on ALEKS.


Scenario

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
Students with very low math skills and confidence to utilize problem-solving strategies. This year, I had several students with very little knowledge of their facts.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
4-5 days per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
15 minutes.


Implementation

How do you implement ALEKS?
ALEKS is an intervention for struggling students.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
No.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
Some students go to the computer lab with a tutor, while others attend an afterschool intervention program. Next year, we are looking into creating a class period strictly for interventions.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I use small groups to differentiate instruction and allow students time to practice at their own pace with ALEKS.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
Never; we do not have many students with computer or Internet access at home.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
Through parent letters and informational meetings, in addition to parent-teacher conferences.


Grading

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
No.

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
I do not incorporate ALEKS into my grading system.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
Yes, it is measured through progress monitoring of skills mastered.


Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
Since using ALEKS, there have been several occasions when students tell me that they know how to do a skill I am introducing because they practiced on ALEKS. When students complete their pie, they feel a great sense of accomplishment.
