Lori Abbate, Teacher
It has been a positive experience. Students are encouraged to work, and I have a tough group of students who really like to see their growth. Students are more willing to try to get correct answers. They don't like getting them wrong and having extra practice, so they try harder. Students that don't try with any other type of math will try with ALEKS. They are really excited to see their progress each time they work in the program.

Scenario

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
Low level students that were disinterested in math.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
1-2 days per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
54 minutes.

Implementation

How do you implement ALEKS?
I cut out any non-essential standards in order to be able to add ALEKS to the curriculum.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
No, I have them choose the topics they cover in their pie, since they have so few choices in math.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
I have a class of 20 students, so we can have everyone on ALEKS at the same time. They use paper and pencil to work out the problems.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I use the ALEKS data to determine classwork grades and who needs extra intervention.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
Most do not have access at home, so they can use the lab before or after school. They are encouraged to come twice a week.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
Parents like it but do not have access at home, so it makes it difficult.

Grading

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
It is not assigned.

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
Classwork grades are given for the number of topics mastered each week. Extra credit is awarded for attending before or after school. Lastly, tests are recorded as quizzes by the improvement they make.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
They must pass three topics before they can work on QuickTables or play games.
