Melissa Saddler, Math Intervention Teacher
I have enjoyed working with ALEKS this year. I feel that it is a good diagnostic tool to help pinpoint what struggling students specifically need assistances with in math. I have seen students who struggle with math gain a better understanding and strengthen their foundation of math concepts. Students are proud of their progress on ALEKS.

Scenario

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
5 days per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
30 minutes.

Implementation

How do you implement ALEKS?
I have students work in ALEKS daily. They also have access to it at home.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
I cover the ALEKS topics in the order that students are learning or using them in their core math class.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
While students work in ALEKS, I visit each one to help them with specific topics they feel they are struggling with.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I had to become flexible. I use the ALEKS reports to help structure my individual and small group lessons.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
Students are encouraged to work in ALEKS or use it when they are in need of an explanation.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
All parents have access to their child's account.

Grading

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
No.

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
The class I instruct has no grade.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
Yes. I want each student to complete a minimum of five topics a week and 2.5 hours a week.
