Amanda Batten, Special Education Teacher
ALEKS helps my students progress at their own pace and see their success with certain topics throughout the program. I see it as a motivational tool for students because they learn at their level and rarely become frustrated. We have seen an increase in math performance and progress by monitoring data in ALEKS. The majority of students who take ALEKS seriously love the program.

Scenario

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
2-3 days per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
50 minutes.

Implementation

How do you implement ALEKS?
I teach reading and math intervention, so we rotate throughout the week to teach both interventions.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
No, it is the student's choice.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
Students are seated every other computer and log in. A teacher and paraprofessional walk around to assist an answer questions.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I am new at the middle school (seventh grade curriculum) so seeing the skills that are needed for my seventh graders helps me focus on certain skills in my other math classes.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
They are encouraged often but many do not have computers.

Grading

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
No.

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
Because it is used as an intervention, their participation with the program is their grade.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
Incentives are put in place for them to complete certain slices of the pie.

Learning Outcomes

Best Practices

Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
Seat students away from others (every other one). Teach small groups on certain skills to increase performance.
