ALEKS is a nice, self-paced math program that enhances the students' academic learning. The program remediates older concepts, and introduces newer ones to students that are academically ready for it. I have seen much progress from our lower level learners. They are remediating their skills, while the students at a higher level are not stuck re-learning concepts they have already mastered.
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
Test scores were low.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
2 days per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
The math department told me to have it as part of my technical literacy class.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
Students work the entire period on ALEKS, I move around the room answering questions as needed.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
They are encouraged as much as possible.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
I do not currently.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
They are given daily points for working on ALEKS.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
No, they move at their own pace.
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
I have seen much progress from our lower level learners. They are remediating their skills, while the students at a higher level are not stuck re-learning concepts they have already mastered. They are excited to see themselves progress through the pie chart and complete the graph.
