ALEKS has been a huge supplement for my math class. The students are engaged for the entire 50 minutes and they do not have the excuse that they have nothing to do when they finish their classwork. I am extremely pleased with the program and will continue to use it in the coming years.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
3 days per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
ALEKS is used a supplement to our textbook. I have the students use ALEKS when they are done with their daily assignment or they do it before they start their homework.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
No. Students are allowed to work at their own pace.
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
ALEKS is used when students are done with their material for that day.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I do not modify my instruction with ALEKS, but I do use it as a reference during my lessons.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
My students are allowed to work on ALEKS whenever they want.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
All of the parents I have talked to are very supportive of ALEKS.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
Students are required to meet a certain percentage increase every week. This amounts to about 20 percent of their homework load.
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
I give students 10 points per week for ALEKS as long as they meet the weekly requirements.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
Yes; my students are required to progress 4 percent per week.
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
My students' knowledge of the material we are covering has jumped since using ALEKS. The program is a great way to reinforce what I have taught them either that day or a few days before. This also works in reverse since many of my students are ahead of where we are in class and I am able to reinforce the material they initially learned on ALEKS. The students like the automatic feedback they get from ALEKS. I have many students that see me in the halls and let me know that they have completed a pie slice or they went up on their last assessment.
Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
My strategy is to give students the recognition they deserve for completing pie slices. I hang my students' names in the hall for others to see what their classmates have done and how far they have gotten. The students enjoy the recognition of their accomplishments. At the end of the year, we are throwing a party for those students who have completed the entire ALEKS Pie.
