Deborah Ivaldi, Teacher
I have three students in second grade who are using the program for enrichment. I have seen these students grow tremendously in the short amount of time they have been using ALEKS, and they are applying concepts learned to classroom instruction.
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
Finding a way to challenge students in the classroom was a problem.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
5 days per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
I use it to enrich my high ability students.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
I encourage students to work through a piece of the pie before moving on to a different topic. This seems to help my second graders stay focused.
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
I teach a mini-lesson, and then we go to the computer lab for 30 minutes.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I am able to move more quickly through lessons because the students are grasping the concepts faster.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
I encourage them to work an additional 30 minutes at home, but this is not required.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
I meet with the parents and introduce to them the format of ALEKS and how to use the online tools to assist with instruction.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
I do not.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
I am really happy with their progress. Students accelerate more quickly through concepts, and they also have a better understanding of concepts that were confusing to them before.
