Laura Zimmer, Teacher
ALEKS provides a way for struggling students, excelling students, and everyone in between, to work at their level. I use it in addition to my regular math curriculum to reinforce the skills that students have learned and are learning in class. I like that the preparation on my end is minimal for ALEKS, since I have so many assignments, projects, and activities already going on in the classroom that I have to prepare.

Scenario

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
Our challenge was filling in knowledge gaps that varied greatly.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
1-2 days per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
25 minutes.

Implementation

How do you implement ALEKS?
I use ALEKS mostly as a supplement outside of the classroom. Students are required to complete 3-6 topics per week.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
I sometimes use it when I work with smaller groups. One group works in ALEKS independently, while I work with the other group teaching a new concept.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I can work with more small groups because ALEKS is an independent activity for a lot of students.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
Students are encouraged to complete 3-6 topics per week.

Grading

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
Yes, about 20 percent.

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
Students get one point per topic, which ends up being about ten percent.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
Students are required to complete topics each week.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
I have seen students improve in some of their basic math skills with ALEKS. The few who have completed their pie chart are happy about it.
