Amanda Tyner, Teacher
I enjoy the use of ALEKS with my students. They are able to work at their own pace and focus on those topics that trouble them the most. Another benefit I have found is that I stopped using ALEKS for a year and came back to it very easily. The use of the system is very self explanatory.

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
The school was looking to improve scores on state-mandated testing.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
1-2 days per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
45 minutes.

How do you implement ALEKS?
The students use ALEKS 1-2 days a week.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
No, the students work on the topics they need to study most, as determined by ALEKS assessments.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
The students work 30-45 minutes on the topics of their choosing.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I found no reason or need to modify my teaching approach.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
None of my students access ALEKS from home.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
Parents are given information at parent/teacher conferences.

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
ALEKS is not assigned as homework.

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
ALEKS is built into our regular class work and makes up about 30 percent of a student's grade. Additionally, ALEKS comprises roughly 20 percent of the test grade, as most are built upon ALEKS assessments.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
They are not required to make certain amounts of progress.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
The students have been able to recoup the basic skills that they have been missing such as long division and simplifying fractions. They also light up when they can actually see themselves master these topics on the pie chart.
