In our afterschool program, ALEKS is very beneficial for students who are motivated and working on grade level skills. Those who are very much below grade level need more direction and teacher support/instruction in conjunction with ALEKS. Students like seeing their progress. There were several students who moved through the curriculum that was aligned to our state standards as well as through material covered in math class. Overall gains ranged from 20-80 percent.
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
My biggest challenge was the limited amount of time students had to practice what they learned during my math class.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
2 days per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
ALEKS is used to support the classroom curriculum as well as to provide additional instruction for under-performing students.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
The topics are done in the order they are presented during classroom instruction.
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
Students use ALEKS as an afterschool supplement to their daily math curriculum.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
It became an online class. I was also able to provide students with more one-on-one support.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
It is encouraged but not required.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
This is an area that could use more support. Most support comes from parents encouraging their students to stay after school.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
No, it is not part of their homework responsibilities.
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
There is no classroom grading affiliated with this program.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
There is no set amount of progress other than encouraging students to use it as much as possible.
