I LOVE ALEKS!!!!! I think it is one of the BEST math programs I have ever seen. My students love working on it, and I have seen a significant amount of academic growth in those students who participate fully in the program. The majority of them are VERY PROUD of their accomplishments and LOVE IT when they complete their pie.
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
Low test scores.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
1-2 days per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
I have my students follow the "standard process" when they work on ALEKS.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
No particular order.
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
All of my students are required to get on ALEKS at least once a week. Because I only have two computers in my classroom, most students only get one opportunity a week to work on the program. During the class periods, the students who are not on ALEKS participate in the daily lesson. This lesson is then taught on another day to the students who were working on ALEKS.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I modify my teaching on a daily basis, as I work with severely emotionally/behaviorally disordered students. Sometimes ALEKS is just the thing I am looking for when I have a student who is having a particularly rough day and needs some "alone" time separate from his/her peers.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
My students are living in a residential treatment center, so they do not have the opportunity to work on ALEKS at home.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
We do not have parental involvement in our school.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
My students earn 20 percent of their grade based on the time and effort they put into working on ALEKS.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
No, they are allowed to work at their own pace. They know that they can earn "special awards" from their teacher for completing their pies.
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
I have seen significant academic improvement by the students who participate fully in the program. The majority of them are VERY PROUD of their accomplishments and LOVE IT when they complete their pie.
