ALEKS has helped increase my students' math skills and proficiency on monthly benchmark tests and the Hawaii State Assessment (HSA). During the first round of HSA, five out of my 21 fifth grade students were proficient in math. By the third round, ten out of 21 students were proficient or exceeding in math. We have gone from 23 percent proficient to 47 percent proficient. The students are excited to see their pies fill up as they increase their skill sets.
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
Our school didn't have a structured math intervention curriculum.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
4 days per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
ALEKS is part of our afterschool Extended Learning Opportunity (ELO) program.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
The first half of the class period is for ALEKS, and the second half is for enrichment.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I can do a lot more one-on-one with students, as it is a small group after school.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
It is not required.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
I don't use ALEKS for grading because it is used in an afterschool program.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
I require an increase of ten topics in students' pies each day.
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
