Patricia Herrera, Teacher
We had some difficulty with the lower and average math students not being successful with the program we were using before ALEKS. Two teachers from our school saw ALEKS at a workshop they attended and had a representative come to our school to demonstrate it. We were impressed and began using it shortly thereafter. I firmly believe ALEKS gives students better opportunities for explanation and use of math tools. Students like it better than the previous program, and so do I.

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
The previous program did not give the explanations or type of explanations offered by ALEKS. This was difficult, as many students would not ask for help from the staff and were learning very little.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
4 days per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
60 minutes.

How do you implement ALEKS?
Students currently work as they have before, individually and at their own pace.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
No, but we hope to have a more directed approach in the future.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
Students work at their own pace, while two tutors and myself walk around the class ready to help students with any questions they may have.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I haven't changed my teaching approach yet, but may in the future.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
Students are expected to work for an hour at home; however, many do not have computers at home, so this does not happen.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
We are planning to have a presentation for parents at the beginning of the school year.

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
Yes, it is 25 percent of their homework.

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
The students' current ALEKS grade is 25 percent for growth, 25 percent for time in the program, 25 percent for completion of the ALEKS Pie, and 25 percent for work on the previous program.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
Yes, we do expect regular progress.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
Students respond well to ALEKS, and I feel they are doing much better in math. The students work hard and feel more successful.

Best Practices

Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
Make sure students are using the explanations that go with the topics, since they are very detailed and understandable. Make sure students are taking notes, especially on the formulas and the details for solving problems.
